  • Champions League Standings After Six Rounds: Who Is Safe, Who Is at Risk, and What Comes Next

Six rounds of the Champions League league phase are complete, and the tournament has reached a natural pause before its decisive stretch in January. With two matchdays remaining, several clubs have already secured their place in the knockout rounds, while others face mounting pressure as qualification scenarios become clearer.

The Situation After Six Matchdays

The Champions League league phase has reached a critical checkpoint. After six of eight rounds, clubs now have a clear understanding of where they stand before the competition resumes at the end of January. No further matches will be played in 2025, giving teams time to regroup, recover, and reassess their objectives.

With only two fixtures left for each of the 36 teams, the margin for error is shrinking fast. Some clubs are already guaranteed a place in the knockout stage, while others are fighting to stay within the top 24. For teams near the bottom of the table, elimination is becoming increasingly likely unless dramatic turnarounds occur.

How Qualification Works Under the New Format

Under the current Champions League format, the final league standings play a decisive role in determining each club’s fate. Teams finishing between first and eighth place qualify directly for the Round of 16, avoiding any additional playoff matches. This is the most desirable route, as it offers extra rest and preparation time.

Clubs placed from ninth to 24th enter an additional playoff round, played over two legs, home and away. These ties determine who joins the top eight in the Round of 16. Teams finishing between 25th and 36th are eliminated from European competition entirely. In the event of tied points after eight rounds, several criteria apply, including goal difference, goals scored, away goals, number of wins, and club coefficient.

Arsenal Set the Pace at the Top

After six rounds, Arsenal stand alone at the top of the table with a perfect record. Mikel Arteta’s side have collected the maximum 18 points, showing consistency, control, and efficiency across all their matches. Bayern Munich follow in second place with 15 points, while Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Atalanta are level on 13 points.

Atalanta’s presence in the top five has been one of the biggest surprises of the competition, especially following the departure of Gian Piero Gasperini. These five teams have already secured at least a place in the knockout stage and are now focused on finishing in the top eight to avoid the playoff round.

The Crowded Battle Behind the Leaders

Positions six through nine are occupied by Inter, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Liverpool, all sitting on 12 points. This group remains well-positioned but cannot afford complacency, as a single poor result could push them into the playoff zone.

More concerning is the situation for traditional giants Barcelona and Juventus. Barcelona currently sit in 15th place with 10 points, while Juventus are even lower in 17th with nine. Even two wins in the remaining matches may not be enough to guarantee direct qualification to the Round of 16, making playoff participation a likely scenario.

Clubs on the Brink and Those Needing a Miracle

Several teams are already facing uphill battles. Eintracht Frankfurt and Club Brugge, both on four points, have slim chances of finishing inside the top 24. For others, qualification now borders on the improbable. Bodø/Glimt, Slavia Prague, Ajax, Villarreal, and Kairat would require near-perfect results combined with favorable outcomes elsewhere to stay alive in the competition.

As the league phase progresses, the gap between contenders and outsiders has become increasingly clear, highlighting the unforgiving nature of the new format.

Liverpool’s Fall and the Shift in Title Favorites

Before the start of the league phase, Liverpool were widely viewed as the main favorites to win the Champions League, according to bookmakers. Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid were also among the leading contenders, with Arsenal considered an outside challenger.

That perception has changed dramatically. Arsenal are now seen as the leading favorites for the title, reflecting their dominant performances and flawless record so far. Bayern Munich and PSG remain close behind, while clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Barcelona have seen their odds drift as uncertainty grows around their campaigns.

Remaining Fixtures Will Decide Everything

The opponents and venues for the final two matchdays were determined at the original draw, and the upcoming fixtures promise decisive moments across the table. Several top teams face direct clashes that could reshape the standings, while others have opportunities to secure qualification against lower-ranked opponents.

With matches scheduled for late January, clubs must balance domestic commitments, squad rotation, and recovery after the winter break. For many teams, these two games will define their entire European season.

The Road to the Champions League Final

The knockout phase schedule is already set. The playoff round draw will take place on January 30, 2026, with first-leg matches in mid-February and return legs one week later. The Round of 16 begins in March, followed by the quarterfinals in April and semifinals at the end of April and early May.

The Champions League final will be played on May 30, marking the culmination of a long and demanding season. With so many clubs still in contention, the final stretch of the competition promises drama, tension, and defining moments at every level.
